Truck overturns at Borim circle, narrow escape for driver

Locals want size of circle reduced; not possible, says PWD

PONDA: A truck overturned while negotiating the Borim circle on Sunday but the lucky driver managed to escape with minor injuries. Irate locals who gathered at the accidental area stated that such mishaps have repeatedly occurred at this black spot, especially with heavy duty vehicles and demanded that the size of the circle be reduced.

It may be recalled that three years ago, three electricity linemen were killed and three others seriously injured at the Borim circle when the truck carrying them overturned.

Locals stated that these memories came to haunt them on Sunday when the truck overturned at the same spot as it was proceeding towards Ponda from Margao. The injured driver escaped with minor injuries and was shifted to the Ponda Sub District Hospital.

Panch Sunil Borkar branded the accidental area as a black spot and stated that several mishaps involving heavy vehicles had often taken place here.

Borkar stated that the panchayat had passed several resolutions to reduce the size of Borim circle and forwarded it to the authorities but all their pleas had fallen on deaf ears. The issue was also debated at the gram sabha.

PWD officials said they have already inspected and reduced the size of the small traffic island near the circle to widen the road and added that it’s not possible to reduce the size of the Borim circle as speeding vehicles from Margao would lead to more accidents. “Speed is the main cause of accidents,” said the officer.
