CANACONA: A truck carrying paddy harvester veered off the shoulder-less NH66 road at Khaddem near Balli on Saturday. The truck slid on its side by over 10 meters. Fortunately, the driver and cleaner escaped with only minor bruises.
The driver, who was at the site of the accident guarding the ill-fated truck, said that he was proceeding to Karnataka from Goa and was carrying a paddy harvester which was brought from Karnataka for harvesting in Salcete.
“When I reached Khaddem, a car coming from the other direction strayed on my lane and to avoid hitting him I tried to take my truck to the shoulder of the road. As there was overgrown vegetation I didn’t realise that there was no road shoulder at the portion. Eventually I lost footing and the truck went down the road,” the driver said.
A local complaining over the state of the National Highway said that the authorities have failed to construct shoulders and crash guards at many places between Balli and Polem which has caused several accidents in recent years.
“This is the second accident reported at the same spot in this week,” he added.
