The Bombay High Court at Goa convicted two businessmen from Mapusa for adulteration of food products.
Justice N A Britto passing its order sentenced the accused Selvon Athisavem and Mannuel Athisavem of Mani Mark Sweet to undergo three months simple imprisonment under the Prevention of food Adulteration Act 1954. The Court has also imposed a fine of Rs 2500 each on them.
The Court in its order has also directed the accused to undergo 15 days imprisonment for the offence of Misbranding of roasted peanuts.
The sample of roasted peanuts was drawn in the year 2004 by the Food Inspector Iva Fernandes of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the sample was found to contain added synthetic colour.
Apart from that, the packages of roasted peanut were also not labeled as required under Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1955.
As such the samples were declared as adulterated by FDA.
