Two college friends turned their shared obsession with pickle videos into a food startup that has now reached a valuation of $8.5 million, or about Rs 81.6 crore.
The founders, Marcus and Bakhtiar, met while studying at the University of Southern California (USC) and graduated in 2022. Their business journey began in 2023, when the two started exchanging pickle-related videos on social media.
What initially looked like a simple online habit soon turned into a potential business opportunity. During the summer of 2023, the two friends decided to leave their jobs and explore whether their interest in pickles could be converted into a consumer food brand.
Their Los Angeles-based company, Good Girl Snacks, was subsequently established with the aim of creating products around the growing popularity of pickles and pickle-based snacks. In February 2024, the startup launched its first product, Hot Girl Pickles.
The founders’ decision to leave their jobs came at a time when social media trends were increasingly influencing food and consumer brands. Rather than treating their pickle obsession as just another internet trend, the two attempted to build a business around it.
Hot Girl Pickles initially gained traction through online sales. The founders used social media to promote the product and connect with consumers, helping the brand build an audience beyond its immediate network.
The company has since expanded its distribution beyond direct online sales and entered major retail stores. This transition marked an important step for the young startup, allowing Hot Girl Pickles to reach customers through physical retail channels as well.
According to a report by CNBC Make It, Good Girl Snacks was most recently valued at $8.5 million. At the exchange rate cited in the original report, that translates to approximately Rs 81.6 crore.
The journey of the two USC graduates highlights how social media habits can sometimes evolve into commercial opportunities. What began with two friends sharing pickle videos eventually became a packaged food business with ambitions to grow into a larger consumer brand.
Their story also reflects the changing path taken by some young entrepreneurs, who are increasingly turning to social media trends and online communities to identify potential products and build businesses.
For Marcus and Bakhtiar, the decision to quit their jobs in 2023 represented a significant gamble. Less than two years after launching Hot Girl Pickles, their company had moved from an online-first operation to retail distribution and secured a multimillion-dollar valuation.
The founders’ experience demonstrates how a niche interest can become the foundation for a business when combined with branding, social media reach and retail expansion. Hot Girl Pickles’ growth has taken the idea from casual pickle videos shared between friends to a company valued at millions of dollars.
