PANJIM: Panjim Police arrested two youth for allegedly attempting to rob Axis Bank’s ATM situated near Panjim KTC bus stand early Wednesday.
Gaurish Shankar Gajre and Sukhadev Jamdar, both aged 19 and hailing from Karnataka, were picked up from the crime scene after a failed attempt to decamp with cash from the ATM.
Police are also probing their role in the month-old incident wherein a security guard foiled a robbery bid by two unidentified persons at Bank of Maharashtra’s ATM located at M G Road, Panjim.
“The modus operandi in both the attempted robberies is the same. The weapons – screwdriver and hammer – seized from the accused in the present case, are similar to those used in the robbery attempted last month,” Panjim PI Siddhant Shirodkar said.
In the earlier attempt, security guard Ranav Singh, who was in the rest room at the Bank of Maharashta ATM, saw a masked man wearing gloves at the machine and found that he was trying to break open the ATM machine using a hammer and screw drivers. Singh fought the thief despite being hit multiple times on his head. The thief and an accomplice managed to escape but the guard succeeded in foiling the robbery attempt. He was felicitated by Goa Police for his bravery.
Singh, who is on his way back to Goa from his native town, will be called for an identification parade. “Once the duo is identified, we will arrest them in the previous robbery attempt case too,” the PI said.
