PANJIM: The Goa Shastriya Maratha Samaj (GSMS) and Akhil Goa Kharvi Samaj (AGKS) have given 10 days ultimatum to Goa government to arrest the person responsible for raping and murdering the 50-year-old fisherwoman in Canacona last week, failing which they will stage a protest on the streets.
AGKS President Vishwanath Halarnkar said they demand quick arrest of the culprit(s) and to provide safety to fisherwomen who go house-to-house to sell fish while addressing a press conference in the capital on Monday.
“The government should arrest the culprit quickly and give justice to the victim’s family. If not, we will bring together our entire community and protest on the streets,” he said. The associations are expected to submit a memorandum in this connection to the government on Tuesday.
Halarnkar further demanded that fisherwomen, who sell fish from door to door the remote villages, should be given protection in the wake of attacks on women. The GSMS President Adv Chandrakant Chodankar also voiced similar viewpoint on the matter.
