Undertrial escapes from police custody

MARGAO: Goa police were left red faced on Thursday after an under trial gave a police escort party the slip right in the Margao court building around noon. That’s not all.

The under trial, Irshad Sangur, a resident of Moti Dongor, was spotted in the city in the Hari mandir area, talking to his relative from Moti Dongor, before making good his escape after being identified by a journalist.
The 21-year-old accused escaped from police custody when he was brought to the court of JMFC, Margao from Sada jail, Mormugao for a remand on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when the accused who was accompanied by two escort personnel, was being taken to the office on the ground floor after the judge directed that he be given services of a lawyer under the free legal aid scheme as he was not represented by a lawyer.
As frantic search for the accused proved futile, a complaint was filed at Margao police station with offence for escaping from custody.
Margao police said accused Sangur is involved in six cases of bag lifting from parked cars in Margao and two cases in Calangute Police jurisdiction. He was arrested  on June 17.
