PORVORIM: The Goa Legislative Assembly witnessed an uproar over political interference in sports, even as Legislators demanded better infrastructure facilities.
Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao and Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar raised the issue, stating that political interference was affecting the performance of sportspersons. “The standard of football has dropped. Goa Football Development Corporation (GFDC) has to be energised and given more accountability… Football won’t be upto the mark if the Chairman is a politician. It is going into the drains,” Alemao alleged.

Arolkar on the other hand alleged interference of politics in sports, urging politicians to stay away from sports. He also asked the government to stop the trend of one president holding charge of various associations.
Meanwhile, Nuvem MLA Aleixo Sequeira has sought a football ground in his constituency.
“The village of Loutolim has a football ground acquired by the Sports Department. It has a hall for indoor games but unfortunately, it has not been maintained. If it is not attended to, then the day is not far when it will collapse. I request you (Sports Minister) to visit the ground and see what pathetic condition it is,” he said.
“Nuvem is generating footballers and they are achieving fame across world, but this village does not have a football ground. Sports plays a very important role in the development of a child and this basic facility of a football ground is essential. So please pay attention,” Sequeira added.
