UTTA 2011 agitation: Court completes hearing

MARGAO: The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Margao completed hearing in the case linked to United Tribal Association Alliance (UTTA) agitation reported on  May 25, 2011, which had rocked the State with two leaders’ deaths. 

Their charred bodies were found by police then.

Mangesh Gaonkar and Dilip Velip had died in the agitation, which was started with the objective of giving the ST community of Goa their due rights including political reservation.

As per charge sheet, 14 alleged accused have been charged under Section 304 (Culpable Homicide). Court has posted the matter for final order on March 30.

On May 25, 2011, a large number of people from the ST community had blocked the NH-17 in support of their demands. However, the agitation had turned violent when police, along with locals, began thrashing the tribals.

Tribal leaders – Mangesh and Dilip – who had participated in the agitation were trapped inside a cashew factory, which was put on fire and were charred to death.
