BICHOLIM/MAYEM: Torrential rains during the last 24 hours paralysed normal life in Bicholim taluka on Tuesday, while water from the Bicholim and Valwanti rivers at Sanquelim crossed normal mark.
According to reports, water levels have crossing the normal mark and there is a possibility of floods if rains continue in Bicholim taluka on Wednesday.
Water levels at the Bicholim River rose sharply and low-lying areas at Bandarwada, Gaonkarwada, Lamgao, some parts of Bordem and the market area in Bicholim town were inundated. “The water level from Bicholim River on Tuesday touched 3 metres, while at Sanquelim, the water level rose to 2 metres,” informed WRD Engineer K P Naik.
“The rainfall reported during the last 24 hours in Bicholim was 3.50 inches, while the total rainfall reported in Bicholim is 64 inches,” he added.
Some low-lying areas in Sanquelim including Gauthan, Virdi and the area near Sanquelim market was inundated despite four pumps installed to pump out the excess water.
“Once the water level crosses two metres, we will start pumping out water to avoid further danger,” said Naik.
The fire personnel from Bicholim fire station are kept on their toes attending to different incidents of uprooted trees. SFO Shripad Gawas informed that trees were uprooted at Mulgao, Narvem, Shirgao, Mayem and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, a disaster management team led by Deputy Collector Narayan Gad, Joint Mamlatdar Sripad Majik, executive engineer Pramod Badami, AE P V Sreekumar, K P Naik and Kamlakant Majik are continuously monitoring the situation to prevent floods in Bicholim.
