PONDA: Locals at Varkhandem are irked due to sewage being let out on the roadside by a residential cum commercial complex near the flyover. Despite repeated complains, the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) is yet to initiate any action.
Locals complained that apart from the stench that the waste emanates, the road has become slippery for motorists, and pedestrians are unable to use the road. Trouble has aggravated as the heavy vehicles entering the Ponda town pass through this road.
An irate local informed that several complains have been made to the PMC over the past one month, however, no action has been initiated. It has been brought to the notice of the municipality that at some places the residential waste is released into main nullah by directly connecting domestic waste pipeline into nullah.
When Herald contacted the Ponda Municipal Council Chief Officer, Navanath Naik he informed that he is aware of such cases and acknowledged that locals have complained to him. He said he has issued notices to six such cases wherein domestic waste is released either in the open or into nullah, asking them to disconnect their pipe connected to nullah and roadside gutter.
He said further that municipal supervisors and inspectors conduct regular inspection with respect to waste released in open and takes action.
Regarding the case in question, said that some members of residential complex were summoned and directed them to disconnect the pipes of waste released into nullah and also asked them to control overflowing sewage. Naik assured that strict action will follow against those who ignore to conduct maintenance of their soak pits.
