VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council Market Committee Chairperson Fiola Rego along with MMC Vice Chairman Saifullha Khan and Ward Councillor Krishna Salkar conducted a surprise inspection of the vegetable and fruit market on Monday morning, following complaints that the vendors were encroaching beyond their area.
Rego, Khan and Salkar along with the market inspectors warned the vegetable and fruit vendors not to encroach beyond their area, as it was causing hardship to pedestrians and vehicles.
Serving a one-day notice to the vendors, the inspection team warned the vendors that the market inspectors would confiscate their goods, if found displayed beyond their prescribed area.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Vice Chairman Saifullha Khan informed that Rego has been appointed as the new market inspection committee chairperson.
“This was our first inspection since she took over as chairperson. We have warned the vegetable vendors not to display their goods beyond their area,” said Khan.
When asked why similar action was not taken against the shopkeepers, who have also encroached on footpaths to display their goods, Rego replied, “We have received complaints about vegetable and fruit vendors encroaching on the road and so we have this inspection.”
When it was brought to her notice that some shops in the vegetable market have illegally expanded their premises by removing the existing garbage bin, Rego said, “We are only inspecting the vendors encroaching on the road and others illegalities will be looked into later.”
“We inspected the vegetable and fruit vendors near the fish market on Monday and I will conduct similar inspections on those shops encroaching on the footpaths. If these shopkeepers are found encroaching on the footpath to display their goods, the council will initiate action against these illegal encroachers,” Rego added.
