Vasco’s chicken market vendors operating sans FDA licence!

VASCO: A joint inspection of Vasco’s chicken market by NGO Niz Goenkar Fauz along with the officials of various departments on Thursday revealed that most vendors were operating without FDA licence and other documents.

However, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) officials were conspicuous by their absence.

NGF along with the officials from Departments of Health, Metrology and the FDA conducted a joint inspection following complaints that the vendors in the chicken market were operating in unhygienic conditions.

NGF’s Suresh Naik said it is shocking that several chicken vendors from the Vasco were operating without the necessary permissions and NOCs from the concerned authorities.

“It is shocking that the MMC has not conducted any inspection and has not imposed any fines on these vendors. On one hand, the MMC complains of not having funds and on the other hand, it is dragging its feet to initiate action and collect taxes, etc,” Naik claimed.

Naik said NGF had requested the MMC to conduct an inspection of chicken market but the civic body refused.

Another NGF member Dr Kalidas Vaingankar said, “During the inspection it came to light that most vendors did not possess FDA licence and other documents. Further, the butchers were working in unhygienic conditions as their aprons too were unclean. We have brought all these illegalities before the authorities and expect swift and strict action.”

Later, almost all shops were issued notices.
