The panchayat plans to levy the charges in coordination with the Directorate of Fisheries since the jetty and the infrastructure belongs to the Fisheries department.
Sarpanch Melvyn Sanches has now convened a special meeting of the panchayat body to take a decision, which will be implemented after seeking the necessary nod from the Fisheries department.
Sanches told Herald that the department of Fisheries will be approached by the panchayat body with a proposal to levy parking fees on the fish transporting trucks at the Cutbona jetty. “There’s a government circular mandating the Panchayat to levy parking fees on vehicles in coordination with the property owner. In our case, the Panchayat is willing to share the revenue generated by the parking fees with the Fisheries department”, he said.
Rough estimates prepared by the Velim panchayat has pegged the revenue generation of Rs 20,000 from each wholesale fish agency for a period of 10 months, excluding the two months when the fishing ban is in force.
The Panchayat has convened a special meeting of the Panchayat body to take a decision so that the parking fees are levied at the earliest in coordination with the Fisheries department.
