CANACONA: Shopkeepers from Poinguinim bazaar have demanded that a traffic officer be posted there to reduce traffic hazards. The bazaar road is very narrow, but two-wheelers are still parked on either side. The locals feel that a traffic officer would help curb the problem to some extent.
They also demanded a speed breaker on either end of the Poinguinim Bridge as two-wheelers moved at high speeds, putting the lives of citizens at risk.
Sarpanch Mahesh Naik informed that many accidents had taken place at the bazaar. A few months ago, a truck crashed into a house, damaging its façade and causing a huge loss.
A section of motorists from Canacona have also requested the authorities to trim the huge trees on both sides of the Karmal Ghat stretch of National Highway 17, to avoid accidents.
Motorcycle Pilots’ Association members from Chaudi, Canacona, pointed out that the entire 2.4 km Karmal Ghat stretch has sharp curves and huge trees on either side, which obstructs the motorists’ view of oncoming vehicles. They claimed it was the reason for the large number of mishaps there.
Fish-transport trucks have also added to the problem. These trucks do not have sealed containers to carry fish, due to which water drips on the road, making it slippery for other vehicles.
Mishaps often take place on the NH-17 from Gulem to Balli due to the sharp curves and poor condition of the roads. On Monday, a lorry went off the road at Paddi, injuring the driver and a cleaner.
