VASCO: Verna police booked 23 people whilst arresting some in a mob fight on Friday.
A fight involving around 80 people over plucking of coconuts occurred on Friday morning between two groups. The situation was tensed till Friday late evening at Verna police station.
As per information, the mob fights occurred between members of Niz Goenkar Revolutionary Front (NGRF) and members of Fabrica of Sancoale church over a hired person who had started to pluck coconuts from a plot. Matters took a bad turn after the pluckers loaded a rickshaw with coconuts and were proceeding to deliver them to the Church committee. However, they were allegedly assaulted by NGRF members who reportedly damaged the rickshaw.
Sources said that later villagers, including parishioners of Sancoale church, arrived at the site and allegedly assaulted the NGRF members. Sensing the situation getting tensed, additional police force was summoned by the Verna police at the site to clear the mob.
Sources from Verna Police later called both the parties and arrested 23 people. Mormugao DySP Sunita Sawant said that cross written complaints were registered at Verna police station.
“We received a call on Friday morning that there could be mob fight as people are gathering near the old church at Sancoale and that one rickshaw has been already damaged. After receiving the information, one control vehicle along with one ASI, one constable and a driver who were available nearby rushed to the spot. Other staff from Vasco and Verna Police Station were also summoned.
She further said that we called both parties to Verna Police station where they registered a complaint against each other.
Police have registered both the written cross complaints under Section 506(II), 324, 143, 447, 147, 323, 427, 504, read with 149 IPC. Those people who have been injured in the fight have been referred to medical examination.
“On complaints of Elisbao Vaz, we have arrested three people Chandrashekar Vasta, Dr Kalidas Vaigankar and Suresh Naik and on the complaint of Dr Kalidas Vaigankar, we have arrested 5 males and 15 females,” informed DySP Sawant.
