VASCO: About 25 policemen were embroiled in a four-hour drama on Saturday evening when a youth from Assoi-Dongre in Dabolim, who was accused of assaulting two youth from the area, refused to surrender to the police.
What made the situation particularly volatile was that the youth was stationed on the terrace of his house, armed with a knife and three ferocious dogs. High drama ensued when the youth started flinging tiles and stones at the police, making it difficult for them to overpower him.
According to sources, the incident occurred at about 3.30 pm when a group of boys went to the residence of the accused, Nimesh Loat, at Assoi-Dongre, who was accused of causing problems in the locality.
A source from the area informed that Loat had been involved in a scuffle at Bogmalo with some boys from Assoi Dongre earlier in the morning.
“As the group of boys went to question him at his residence at Assoi Dongre, Loat, who is reportedly a drug addict, assaulted Diptesh Naik with a blunt object on his head and another boy Sameer Shashidharan on his head and back,” said the source.
The two injured youth were later rushed to the hospital. While Naik, who received nine stitches on his head, was discharged from the hospital, Sashidharan was undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital at Chicalim.
Vasco Police was alerted of the incident at about 3 pm and a police team rushed to the site. On noticing the police, Loat rushed to the terrace and started pelting stones and tiles at the police team.
The police added that Loat, who was also breeding dogs in his house, took along with him three of his 11 dogs towards the terrace.
The entire drama lasted for almost four hours and the police were unable to enter the terrace to nab Loat since the accused was reportedly armed with a knife and had ferocious dogs with him.
Despite several requests by the police to surrender, Loat failed to come down from the terrace. The police then summoned his father, who is employed at the airport. Despite his father’s request, Loat refused to surrender and demanded the presence of a lawyer for his safety.
It was only after Vasco PI Sagar Ekoskar, who was attending an official meeting at South Goa Police Headquarters, rushed to the site that Loat’s father explained the consequences to Loat and managed to persuade his son to come down from the terrace.
“As the accused refused to come down from the terrace, I had planned to take a risk and go up to the terrace and nab him,” PI Ekoskar told Herald.
The four-hour drama finally ended when Vasco police arrested Loat at about 7.30 pm.
