VASCO: Mormugao deputy collector Gourish Sankhwalkar issued orders to serve eviction notices to residents of 34 shanties along the Katem-Baina shore, near the PWD sewerage plant. This has been done as the sea water level has risen and is posing a threat to the lives of people and their property.
The decision was taken after the talathi submitted a report to mamlatdar Laxmikant Dessai stating that the structures in the area face immediate danger due to the rise in the sea level. A joint inspection by Shankhwalkar, Dessai and water resources department assistant engineer M S Shekhawat was held on Tuesday to verify the intensity of soil erosion.
“It was decided that WRD will adopt temporary measures to avoid soil erosion in the area and soon the work of putting up sand bags will commence. During the inspection officials also noticed that a few residents had constructed a concrete wall illegally that would obstruct the construction of the retaining wall that is to be built after the monsoon,” Shankhwalkar said.
