Waste collection vehicles for three panchayats

PORVORIM: The panchayats of Saligao, Sangolda and Guirim on Friday received vehicles costing Rs 5.50 lakh each for collecting garbage. Tourism Minister and Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar stated that the vehicles had been donated under the Corporate Social Responsibility Fund.

He also requested the companies to supply “similar, but slightly-bigger” vehicles to the other three panchayats of the Saligao constituency – Pilerne, Nerul and Reis Magos.
“At present, these six panchayats pay lakhs of rupees to contractors for the collection of garbage and its disposal at the Saligao plateau. These expenses would be saved and they could use the same for developmental works,” said Parulekar.
Parulekar also said that three more ‘high mast lamps’ costing Rs 8.50 lakh each would be installed at the Betim ferry wharf, the Betim-Verem junction and at Saligao.
Regarding the ropeway project at Nerul, he said, “The comunidade had agreed to give 8,000 sq mts of land, while private land owners agreed to donate some of their land. The Tourism department requested 26,000 sq mts, and had already floated tenders inviting quotations for the project.”
