MARGAO: The burning issue of garbage and multi-dwelling commercial buildings dominated the gram sabha of Benaulim village Panchayat on Sunday.
Newly-elected Sarpanch Remedious Fernandes, who chaired the meeting, faced a host of questions on garbage collection and disposal. Members also raised the question of outsiders building multi-dwelling units in the village in the absence of a garbage disposal mechanism in place.
Gram sabha member Jose Rodrigues drew attention of the Sarpanch to the waste disposal problem facing the village. While pointing to the construction activity underway in the village, Jose demanded that the Panchayat stop giving construction permissions to outsiders building huge projects in the village.
Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva, who attended the meeting, later told the media that though Benaulim Panchayat has taken up the work of waste disposal, the ground reality has not changed totally due to a host of factors, including the fact that hotel and other waste finds its way along the road sides in the village. The MLA favoured disconnection of power and water connection to tackle the nuisance in the village.
The Sarpanch later told the media the meeting discussed the solutions to overcome the garbage menace. He disclosed plans to call a special meeting to constitute the various committees, including the ward development committees.
