CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo launched a water pipeline laying work at Umtta Vaddo in the village on Wednesday. The new pipeline would be laid from Calangute Association Hall to Baga at an estimated cost of Rs 76.71 lakh.
The work is expected to be completed within three months. Once completed, it could put an end to the water woes faced by Calangute villagers for the last several years.
On the occasion, Lobo said, “The villagers of Calangute have been facing acute water shortage on daily basis and were receiving PWD water on alternate days. Water was supplied for a maximum of two hours on alternate days, which was insufficient to meet the daily requirements.” Therefore, the new pipeline is being laid, he said, adding a similar pipeline has also been laid at Porba Vaddo to meet the needs of the residents.
Lobo also suggested laying of water pipelines on both the sides of the roads to avoid road digging.
“Roads are dug up, practically every fortnight, for taking commercial or domestic water connections, causing considerable inconvenience to the general public,” Lobo said adding, “once parallel pipelines laid, there would no need for road digging.”
PWD Assistant Engineer Belgaumkar said that the contractor has been directed to commence the work soon and complete it by November to avoid inconvenience to locals and tourists.
