PANJIM: As opposition to the amendment to the Goa State Agricultural Tenancy Act 2014 continues, Goa government has asked the tenants not to fall victim to politically motivated leaders and land grabbers.
“The amendments were passed at the recently concluded Goa Legislative Assembly session wherein all 40 MLAs had rendered unanimous support (to it). The amendment in the Tenancy Act is to abolish rights of those land grabbers who had been surviving on the discord between the land owner and the tenant,” Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said at a press briefing on Monday.
The chief minister alleged that the land grabbers and some politically motivated leaders are misleading people against the amendments.
“If any tenant fails to file their claim before the authorities within three years, the government can further extend the deadline. There will be no injustice to tenants. We are committed to give tenants their rights,” Parsekar said. He went on to say that government is responsible to get rid of any hindrance to tenants’ rights.
Parsekar, however, did not commit himself to replying to a media question whether government will take disciplinary action against BJP leaders, who are openly criticizing the amendments. “Disciplinary action cannot be disclosed at this time… This is democracy. There is a freedom of speech, but, if any person has to oppose the government move, he should speak to me first.”
