Wet Dussehra ahead as rains hit State

PANJIM/BICHOLIM: Heavy rains continued to lash Goa, with many areas recording continuous rainfall. Monday morning saw many roads in the State slightly submerged due to the continuous rains and many places in the capital city witnessed water logging.
The State received heavy showers in the last two days, including thunder showers in many places, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recording 48.2 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The heavy rains, however, did not disrupt normal life in the State, but IMD predicted heavy showers in the next three days. Goa will be celebrating Dussehra on Tuesday.
“Light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at most places in Goa for the next three days,” IMD forecast, though it confirmed that there is no threat of rough weather at sea to fishermen in the next 24 hours. The department said the seasonal total rainfall since October 1 has been 2.97inches.
In the past 24 hours, Panjim, Mapusa and Ponda received 5 cms, while Mormugao, Quepem and Sanguem have recorded 1 cm of rain. On the other hand, Pernem has recorded 3 cms and Canacona 4 cms of rain in the past 24 hours. 
“Today’s rain was just a percentage of what we are expecting for the next 2 to 3 days and in the coming days,” IMD sources said.
Last season (June-September) Pernem had recorded the highest amount of rainfall with 133.4 inches, followed by Sankhali, which recorded 132.5 inches. The total seasonal rainfall for the State had touched the 120 inches mark.
However, Panjim had recorded 111.9 inches, while Margao had received 115.6 inches, Mapusa 112.7, Ponda and Old Goa 108.3, Valpoi 116.3, Canacona 108.1, Dabolim 118.3, Sanguem 115.5 inches and Quepem 105.2.
Meanwhile, a flood like situation was reported in the Sankhali area even as the Water Resources Department was able to keep the situation under control.
According to the available information, heavy rains were reported at Virdi Ghat and water started entering the Sankhali market. The flooded Walvanti River caused a flood like situation in the market. 
Taking note of the situation, the WRD immediately swung into action and pressed four pumps into service to pump out water from the market. At around 6.30 am, all the four gates of Anjunem Dam were released. In the afternoon, two gates were closed and till evening when the water level was under control all the gates were closed.
Businessmen were worried about their shops due to the situation in the Sankhali area. 
Sankhali MLA, Dr Pramod Sawant along with WRD officers took stock of the situation. In Bicholim, at several places incidents of uprooting of trees were reported however no property was damaged.
