CANACONA : Two large parts of highly-decomposed carcass of a whale got washed ashore at the Polem beach on Wednesday night causing inconvenience to the residents due its unbearable stink.
Later, the wild life office based at Hathipaul in Canacona was informed and officials visited the spot. However, post-mortem was not possible as the carcass was in a highly-decomposed state.
Wild life officials at the site informed this correspondent that it was not possible to identify the whale and said it could be either blue whale or fin whale, which must have died due to old age, sickness or injury while coming in contact with the fan blades of the propeller of a boat at high seas.
The giant marine mammals are listed in schedule ii of wild life protection act, they said.
Later the carcass was buried under the sand at a secluded spot on the beach by using an excavator with the help of locals.
