MARGAO: That municipality has not carried out the pre-monsoon work was evident when it showered on Wednesday and many parts of Margao were waterlogged and water was found over flowing.
The problem was mainly because the drains were not cleaned and was full of mud and other debris including dry leaves. As it rained continuously, the water accumulated in the drains and could not flow out as the drains were blocked at various places.
In Sirvodem, it was quite chaotic as the drain was choked and at the stretch near a sharp turn the water was flowing across the road. It threatened to enter the houses of some of the residents making many wonder what their fate would be when the monsoons hit the state.
Incidentally, this is the same place where the old storm drain had been illegally filled up to prepare an access to a land that has been illegally developed into plots measuring around 150 sq mts.
On the other side of Margao, water logging was also observed at the Old Market which got the local councilor Glenn Andrade quite agitated. The emergency squad had to be dispatched to clear the drains so that the water that was collected could flow away.
It may be recalled that MMC’s efforts to carry out the pre-monsoon works came a cropper as workers were not willing to carry out the work at the wages offered by the council. After a delay the MMC had to finally ask contractors to do the pre-monsoon works a few days back.
