BICHOLIM: The family from Sonarbhat, Latambarcem in Bicholim taluka, whose goats and calves were killed by a wildcat, is still awaiting compensation from the forest department.

A month ago, a wildcat had killed eight goats and two calves belonging to Babu Nana Varak. After the attack, the Varak family wrote to the forest department seeking compensation of Rs 80,000. But even after a month, the family still has not seen any positive move from the forest department.
“After the news reported in the media, the department came here and had also installed some cameras in the area. They did not speak a word about the loss that we suffered despite submitting a written letter to them,” Nitin Varak said.
The family is dependent on dairy farming and attack on the cattle by the wildcat was like an attack on them. “We are now worried that the wildcat would attack once again and so as precautionary measure we keep the lights on in the cowshed and also cover the entrance with thorny plants,” Savita Varak said.
They are thankful to the local MLA and Speaker Rajesh Patnekar who has provided them with some financial help. However, they are disappointed over the apathy shown by the forest department.
