PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said the government’s total spending on the education sector shall be increased to 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the next five years from the current 3.8 percent.
“Goa almost spends 3.8 percent of its GDP on educational sector and in this five year term we will take it to 6 percent,” Parrikar said addressing the gathering on the inauguration of Dempo College new campus at Cujira Integrated Complex.
“The government is proposing to create integrated school complexes, where all educational institutions would be accommodated at one place. During all my tenures I have pumped in lot of money in creating infrastructure for educational institutions,” he said.
Parrikar further said the government intends to spend Rs 50-100 crore on creating integrated school complexes. “We are already working out complexes in Margao and Mapusa as the people have been demanding to shift the schools out of the cities in view of traffic congestion.”
He added that he has always preferred to retain the Education and Finance portfolios as he loves both departments.
“I have purposely kept these portfolios with me. Finance is my love and education is another portfolio which I like to handle. Education portfolio which contributes for 30 percent of the total budget is not preferred by many of the ministers.”
‘Parrikar quitting Union cabinet loss to India’
PANJIM: Union Minister for Human Resource Development and senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar on Friday said Manohar Parrikar quitting as defence minister is a huge loss to India and national politics. He said: “It is a huge loss to the national politics and also the country, but on the other hand Goa needs and loves Parrikar and that is the main reason people of Goa brought him back as chief minister.” Javadekar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that Union government has adopted several policies from the Parrikar government. “This Parrikar model of governance will be a real model and in the days to come, other states will take inspiration and emulate them,” he added.
