VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Leo Rodrigues on Tuesday said that he will instruct the garbage contractor to immediately clear garbage thrown around the electricity transformers at various locations in the port town.
Rodrigues said that the municipality has received a letter from the Electricity Department regarding the garbage being thrown around the transformers and making it difficult for the linesmen to attend during emergency calls particularly power outages. He said that henceforth people will not be allowed to throw their waste near transformers garbage as it is not a dumping ground. He also hinted that implementing fines on people dumping garbage in the open.
“I have directed garbage collector to clear the area around electricity transformers on top priority for the convenience of electricity staff,” Rodrigues said.
Stating that dumping of garbage in the open and along the roadside was causing nuisance, Rodrigues said that the municipality will launch a drive and start imposing fines on people found dumping garbage all around. If possible the municipality will seek help of the traffic police to initiate spot fines, which will be hefty for repeated offenders.
It may be noted that Electricity Department assistant engineer Sanjeev Mhalshekar had written to the MMC stating that electricity department staff/linesmen were facing difficulty to attend to emergencies in case of garbage being piled in and around transformers.
