MARGAO: Is former Margao Municipal Chairperson Piedade Noronha, who had played spoilsport to the Congress chances in Fatorda in 2007 polls, planning to contest the coming polls under the Trinamool Congress banner?
When this question was posed to Noronha by newsmen on Wednesday evening, she confirmed having received an offer from the Trinamool Congress leadership to contest from Fatorda on the party banner. “I have received an offer from Trinamool Congress. I have told the TC leadership to give me one week’s time to take a decision”, Noronha said, adding that she would decide on the question after consulting her supporters and workers.
Noronha, however, has made it amply clear that she would contest the coming polls from Fatorda and the only question that remains to be decided is whether to fight the elections as an Independent or on a party banner.
Replying to a question, the former MMC Chairperson said she has already kicked off her election campaign and firmly ruled out withdrawing from the fray.
In the 2007 Assembly polls, Piedade, who contested as an Independent, played spoilsport to GPCC general secretary Vijai Sardessai’s chances of making it to the Goa Legislative Assembly by making a huge dent in the Congress vote bank, giving the BJP second successive win in Fatorda.
Besides Piedade Noronha, Margao Municipal Councillor Arthur D’Silva and Camilo Barretto have decided to contest from Fatorda as Independents.
