Withdraw permission to carry double-tracking work: Congress

Oppn leader tells South Collector it could lead to law and order problem

MARGAO: Leader of Opposition, Digambar Kamat urged the South Goa Collector to withdraw the permission given to South Western Railway (SWR) for the closure of level crossings in Salcete to carry work of double-tracking, which could lead to law and order problem.

“This is to bring to your notice that there is strong opposition to the three mega projects proposed by the government namely railway double tracking, widening of national highway and laying of power transmission line as these projects will cause severe damage to the environment,” Kamat said in a letter to the Collector.

He further said people of Goa are now coming on the roads protesting against the government decision to allow the South Western Railway/Railway Vikas Nigam Ltd to carry out the work of double-tracking. Protests were held during the closure of level crossing road at Nessai, on October 28.

“The protests will continue during the next scheduled closure of level crossing road at Guirdolim, Chandor on November 2 and at Davorlim village on November 9. There is every possibility that the strong opposition to the double tracking work may lead to law and order problem,” he said.

In view of the above, Kamat has urged the South Goa Collector to immediately withdraw the permission granted to the South Western Railway/Railway Vikas Nigam Ltd for the closure of level crossing road and also instruct them to stop all such works pertaining to doubling of railway tracks.
