PANJIM: On International Women’s Day, women ruled the City Corporation election with 53 percent seats won by them. Councilor Asmita Kerkar will also go on to be the new deputy Mayor.
Of the total 30 councilors elected on Tuesday, 16 are women with most being new faces. A total of 38 women candidates were in the fray for the CCP polls while 57 male candidates were contesting alongside them.
All 16 councilors managed to garner 6678 votes together. A total of ten seats were reserved for women in the CCP election this time around.
For the 2011 election, 12 female councilors managed to get placed in the council. Of these, six women have retained their seats – Margarida Fernandes, Sheetal Naik, Ruth Furtado, Vaidehi Naik, Pascoela Mascarenhas and Diksha Mainkar.
The Corporation has now got nine new women’s faces- Reshma Karishetty, Soraya Pinto Makhija, Lata Parekh, Pascoela Mascarenhas, Rekha Kande, Asmita Kerkar, Manisha Manerkar, Lorraine Dias, Shubhada Shirgaonkar and Aarti Harlankar.
