Dr Sabina Martins of Bailancho Saad read out the report of the organization since the last Women’s Day and outlined the government’s failure which led to the deteriorating condition of women in the State.
The students staged a dance performance depicting issues such as sexual assault, substance abuse, communalism, destruction of environment and the need to stop it. Members of Bailancho Saad and students of the school sang women empowerment songs.
At the Women’s legislative Assembly organized by Ms Antonetta, a Question hour session was held where girl students representing various constituencies sought answers from the ministers holding that portfolio.
The questions raised included what safety measures are in place for girls? Why are there no sports clubs for girls? Why the number of national competitions for girls is not same as boys? When will the road to (Rosary) school be ready which is under construction for a year? Why is public money wasted on unutilized buildings taken on rent while at the same time saying there are no funds for toilets for women in public places.
Every department was under scrutiny. Questions were also raised about increased school timings which lead to stress; midday meals, efficient transportation, poor garbage disposal, industry, domestic workers, increasing crimes against women, victim assistance units, apna ghar, GMC, roads, water etc
The gathering passed resolutions to start Nirbhaya centres, remove ban on the film “India’s Daughter”, to roll back bar timings, to remove casinos, to have same sports facilities for girls without discrimination, to have regular efficient bus service without overcrowding among others.
The students resolved to conduct awareness campaigns on the various rights of the girl child.
