PANJIM: The project to develop an integrated burial and cremation ground for Hindus, Muslims and Christians is set to commence in October, with Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) clearing the decks for the project, which was conceptualised in 2015.
The project is expected to be tendered next month by GSUDA. Estimated to cost Rs 16,47,71,665 the integrated burial and cremation grounds will be set up on the existing cemetery and crematorium that is operated by CCP.
“GSUDA will be tendering and executing the work probably by next month and I think it will start in October. The project includes developing the entire Hindu, Muslim, Lingayat and Khoja cremetorium,” Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado said.
He added, “The project will also take up the restoration and renovation of the Catholic cemetery at St Inez. The existing outside compound walls and internal walls will be demolished and reconstructed.”
Furtado said CCP will have a 500 sq meters built-up area for Out Patient Department (OPD) for animals and after the operation they would be shifted to Curca where 1,500 sq meters built-up area hospital will be put up.
“The proposal also includes a children’s educational park in the vacant space on the site next to the animal shelter along with parking space for people of that area. Rs 9.80 crore will be taken up for the Hindu crematorium and Muslim kabrastan including the park while for Christian cemetery it will be Rs 5.20 crore and Curca animal shelter would approximately Rs 1.55 crore,” the Mayor said.
