PANJIM: Several labour unions under the banner Goa Convention of Workers held a public meeting at Azad Maidan as a part of nationwide strike to protest Central government’s alleged disrespectful attitude towards workers in its policies and actions.
Unlike other parts of the country, the protest did not affect the normal life and the banks remained unaffected despite the bandh.
Addressing a gathering at Azad Maidan, Goa Convention of Workers’ leader and General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress Christopher Fonseca appealed to the workers to protest against the anti-labour policies of the Central government. He said that the pro-capitalist policies of the Central government have broken the backbone of the working class.
“Several nationalised banks are closing down due to wrong policies of the Central government, which needs immediate correction,” he said. Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee President Pratima Coutinho also addressed the crowd expressing anger that government has been neglecting the welfare of the workers.
Union leader Suhash Naik said that sectors like banking, insurance, manufacturing and others are severely affected due to wrong policies of the government.
