Workers to strike on Jan 8 and 9

PANJIM: The Goa Convention of Workers (GCW), an umbrella organisation of trade unions in the State, has decided to join the nation-wide general strike call given by Central Trade Unions and Mass organizations on January 8 and 9, to oppose the anti-people policies of the Central and State government.
In a statement issued, GCW has said the general strike cuts across all barriers, political, economic and social class and is meant to mount a massive counter offensive against the non-performing government.
“The policies of the government has deeply hurt the working class, the self employed, the farmers, youths, students, women, small traders, dalits and tribal communities in the country,” GCW said.
GCW claimed that Goa is too facing similar problems where the closure of mining operations has rendered lakhs of people unemployed. It further said that growing unemployment, corruption, crimes, casinos, drugs, prostitution is now been the identity of the State.
“The present government has become non-functional. It is insensitive towards the sufferings and miseries of the salaried, working people and common masses,” GCW said.
