Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has criticised the national selectors for dropping Shubman Gill from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, calling the decision unfair. Speaking to journalist Ravish Bisht, Yograj questioned how a vice-captain could be excluded after just four or five failures, arguing that several players in the past were given prolonged runs despite inconsistent performances. He also wondered whether young Abhishek Sharma would face a similar fate if he failed in a few matches.
Gill’s omission followed a lean run in T20Is after the Asia Cup 2025 and series against Australia and South Africa. Though Gill enjoyed a strong ODI year in 2025, scoring 490 runs in 11 matches, his T20I returns were modest, including scores of 4, 0 and 28 against South Africa. Yograj further drew a parallel with Kapil Dev, claiming the former captain was backed despite poor form, highlighting what he termed selective decision-making in Indian cricket.
