PANJIM: At a special council meeting held at the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Tuesday morning, Rohit Monserrate and Vasant Agshikar were elected unopposed as Panjim Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Rohit’s mother Jennifer Monserrate who is the Taleigao MLA and St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes who is also backed by Rohit’s father, Atanasio Babush Fernandes, were present at the meeting and they felicitated the new Mayor and Deputy.

CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues chaired the meeting where all the corporators were sworn into office. Former mayor Uday Madkaikar called on all 30 corporators to work together for the people of Panjim.
Also on the agenda of the meeting was the election of CCP’s Standing Committee, Public Works Committee, Public Health and Market Committee and Women and Child Welfare Committee. Several of the earlier corporators are part of these panels while Pramay Mainkar was appointed as the Chairman of the Market Committee.
Rohit also addressed the council and promised to work on civic-related demands of all corporators including the Opposition.
Post the meeting, Rohit addressed the media persons, where he made it a point to thank the BJP party leaders for having faith in him and said he would look at implementing the agenda they have and his father’s (election) manifesto for Panjim.
Regarding plans for Panjim, he reiterated that he would seek consensus from the panel.
He also acknowledged that he can rely on the experience of the old corporators and that the fact that his father is an MLA and mother is a minister would help him as Mayor too.
Later in the day, BJP Goa President Sadanand Shet Tanavade and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant felicitated Rohit and Vasant.
