Cuncolim Village has a rich legacy and history of religious and cultural harmony. One can see a great bondage of brotherhood between Hindus and Catholics. To maintain this legacy of religious harmony, the present generation is taking keen interest to preserve and uphold the tradition.
Two boys from Sanvorcotto Nikhil Sanjay Dessai and Pritam Kunde made cribs at their home. Nikhil Dessai, a student of Std X, has been preparing a crib during the Christmas Season in his home for the past six years.
He got into this habit when he was in the fourth standard. His hobby not only won him laurels but also fetched him prizes in different competitions organised by some social clubs.
Nikhil says that festivals, irrespective of their religious significance, bring all mankind together and he feels that everyone must participate in each other’s festivals.
Nikhil’s village mate Pritam Kunde has also prepared a crib this Christmas Season and took part in a competition.
For the past many years, some boys from Coprevaddo, Vrushabh Dessai, Sreyash Dessai, Bhargao Dessai and Guddu Shelar, to name a few, along with other youngsters have been setting up cribs and taking part in the Cuncolim Ganesh Mandal Crib competition and ICICI bank crib contests.
Cuncolim has always preserved religious tolerance and harmony. The Cuncolim Ganesh Utsav Mandal not only has Hindu members but also comprises of persons from the Catholic and Muslim community.
The same harmony can be witnessed when Cuncolim celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Health. One can see many Hindus visiting the church on the occasion of Our Lady’s feast.
Similarly, many Catholics take part in the famous Cuncolim Sotrio and Cuncolikarin Jatra.
At Coprewaddo, boys have been preparing cribs for the past 10 years. They also organise Christmas Tree programmes and take part in the New Year celebrations.
