PANJIM: Seventeen young swimmers crossed River Mandovi from Divar ferry wharf to Sao Pedro ferry wharf, Ribandar, in the swimming event organised by Amigos De Clark, on Wednesday.
First place was bagged by Vihan Gev (clocking 10.15 minutes), second by Reuben Ropha (clocking 10.24 minutes) and third by Tejas Shirvoikar (clocking 10.36 minutes)
Total nine boys and eight girls from Fatorda participated, who were trained by professional swimming trainers. Total distance crossed was 1km.
Chief guest Assistant Director of Transport, Margao, Jack Rodrigues gave away the prizes to the winners.
Speaking during prize distribution function, Jack congratulated the swimmers for successfully crossing the river and suggested to continue their practice and to do better in the next event.
“I would like to congratulate the organisers for taking an initiative in organising this swimming event,” he added.
Coach Inacio Raposo said, “There has been intense support from the President Francis Clark and Secretary Melissa Clark to train these children. We used to train children in the evening in spite of their busy schedule. We also took them to Assolna River for a practice session and that’s how these young swimmers were acclimatise.
“Today, all the children performed well, and we are very happy. Success comes only after hard work and that’s what made this day successful. We had enough safety protocol for children and the event was well organised,” the coach said.
