MARGAO, AUG 23
Agvad Married defeated Holy Cross Fatorda Married 4-3 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions in the First Fatorda Constituency married inter-ward football tournament organised by Margao Sports Club in the finals at Government Multipurpose School ground, Borda on Sunday. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
Agvad Married were the first to settle down to a rhythm and took the lead when Jose Furtado slotted past the Holy Cross goalkeeper after he received a pass from Menino Furtado.
Changing over, Holy Cross kept themselves in the hunt for the equalizer and were rewarded when Philip Ferrao neatly found the net after receiving a pass.
With the scores level, the tie-breaker system was implemented where Agvad Married emerged victorious, scoring through Menino Furtado, Luis Furtado and Manuel Furtado while Seby Fernandes and Sebastiao Furtado converted for Holy Cross.
Agvad Married were richer by Rs 6,000 while Holy Cross had to settle for Rs 3,000.
The following prizes were awarded: First scorer of the final – Jose Furtado, Agvad. Best goalkeeper of the final – Menino Furtado, Agvad. Best disciplined team – Holy Spirit Boys. Best player of the final – Joaquim Furtado, Agvad.
Francisco Sardinha, MP was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. Damodar Naik, MLA, was the guest of honour while Luis Alex Cardozo presided. Livrament Baretto, Ciriaca Rodrigues, and Roque Baretto, Mohammedan Sporting footballer were the special invitees.
Alex Noronha, secretary of Margao Sports Club welcomed. Socorro Baretto, sports secretary, Margao Sports club compered and later proposed the vote of thanks.
