Angola, Portugal clinch men, women gold

OLD GOA: Goa-India’s Swati Gadhave won the bronze medal for Goa-India by finishing third with a timing of 35 minutes 35 seconds in the women’s 10 km road race, at Miramar.
The gold was won by Portugal’s Claudia Pereira with a timing of 34 minutes 39 seconds and Angola’s Ernestina Maria took the silver with a timing of 35 minutes 16 seconds.
At the half way mark, though, Gadhave was second behind Claudia but could not maintain her position as she was overtaken by Ernestina, and had to settle for the bronze medal.
The other Indian in the fray Manisha Salunkhe finished fourth clocking 36 minutes 27 seconds.
In the men’s race, Angola’s Alexandre clocked 30 minutes 20 seconds to win the gold medal for his country and he was closely followed by fellow countryman Francisco Wehunga who clocked 30 minutes 21 seconds to win the silver. Cape Verde’s Euclides Varela won the bronze with a timing of 30 minutes 23 seconds.
Goa-India’s Shiju CP finished sixth while an injured Francisco Clemente was last.
The women’s medals were presented by SAG’s executive director V M Prabhudessai along with general secretary of Goa Athletic Association Paresh Kamat.
The men’s medals were presented by general secretary of Athletics Federation of India C K Valsan.
