Pune runner finishes top in the 24km Mens’s event; Varsha bags podium finish in 14km Women’s event; Initiative by Catholic Association of Goa to celebrate the peace and communal harmony

PANJIM: Anil Pawar from Pune and Varsha Namdev from Karnataka emerged champions in the Men’s 24km and Women’s 14km races at the inaugural Goa United Marathon, organize by the Catholic Association of Goa, at Campal ground, on Saturday.
Anil easily overcame the challenge posed by Francisco Clement of Goa and Gautam Yadev of Services. Varsha relegated the Goan pair of Danita Diniz and Kavina Gomes to the second and third place. 
Anil was awarded Rs 1 lakh while Varsha took home Rs 50,000.
Ten short distance races were organized for various categories which included children, senior citizens as well as special Olympic category and trophies, and cash prizes were awarded to the first three placed runners.
The races were flagged off at 6.30 a.m. by chief guest, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao in the presence of Chairman of Models Group, MLA of Panjim Constituency Sidharth Kunkoliencar, MD of Golden Sands, Ranjit Cota Carvalho and President of All India Catholic Union, Eugene Gonsalves. The dignitaries were later joined by Deputy Chief Minister, Francis D’Souza for the prize distribution ceremony.
Cecil Rodrigues and her troupe kept the large gathering lively with their zumba routine along with Joe Rose and his group.
The Goa United Marathon was an initiative of the Goa Catholic Union to celebrate the peace and communal harmony in Goa.

Men’s brisk walk race: 1st Rajiv Kastwal, 2nd Kashinath Jalmi, 3rd Epifanio Barret. Women’s: 1st Jaya Kulkarni, 2nd Maria Ferrao, 3rd Dulcina Correia.
Men’s 400m run (Special Olympics race): 1st Vaibhav Bhomkar, 2nd Tukaram Sangaokar, 3rd Kisha Naik.
Women’s 200m run (Special Olympics race): 1st Alcia Antao, 2nd Auria Andrade, 3rd Manjulla Pillammar.
Boys above 14 years 5km: 1st Ajay Vishwakarma, 2nd Teddy Davecelia, 3rd Vijay Vishwakarma.
Girls above 14 years 4km: 1st Prajakta Gawas, 2nd Sharaddha Sainuche, 3rd Cyana Gomes.
Boys above 18 years 8km: 1st Dadapir Patil, 2nd Rohit Oli, 3rd Sushil Kumar.
Girls above 18 years 6km: 1st Prashila Deikar, 2nd Clefa Dias, 3rd Dezmina D’Costa.
Men’s above 45 years 6km: 1st Shyaam Kanconkaor, 2nd Vishwanath Bhalchandresh, 3rd Piedade Colaco.
Women’s above 40 years 4km: 1st Caitana Dias, 2nd Pritiva Silva Lobo, 3rd Rosaria Rebelo.
