Annand Madgavkar succumbs to illness

PANJIM: Annand Madgavkar, former Junior National Badminton champion and winner of BBJ Kerkar Award, died on Thursday, at his residence in Dona Paula.

Madgavkar, 71, is survived by his wife, son and daughter who are both settled in life.

His father Vijay, who was the first badminton national champion, was the founder of the Goa Badminton Association.

Annand was perhaps the only sportsman to return his Kerkar Award when international badminton player Dr Kudchaddkar’s son Anil, was not given admission to the medical college after being promised by the then Chief Minister of Goa.

Anil, who represented India, was not given the three marks he fell short of being admitted to the Goa Medical College. In protest, Annand returned his Kerkar Award.

Annand also won the State Badminton Championship for over eight years. Annand was taking medicines for pancreatic cancer for the past two years and according to family sources suffered a lot for the last fortnight.

Since there was no university during his time, Annand represented Wilson College and became the Junior National Shuttling Champion. However, he lost in the semi-final in the senior category.
