MARGAO: A superb strike by Francis Baretto helped Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club overcome host Varca Sports Club 1-0 to cruise into the semi-finals of all-Goa Varca Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Varca Sports Club, at Varca ground, Tuesday.
The teams adopted a cautions approach especially in the opening session as a result there were few thrills at either end. Midway in the opening session, Sao Jose de Areal struck the rhythm and scored the all-important goal in the 28th minute when Francis slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
Post resumption, Varca Sports Club showed urgency in their approach and fired couple of salvos against the rival goal. However, Sao Jose de Areal goalkeeper Pritesh Naik stood like a rock under the bar as he blocked Columban Noronha’s volley.
Sao Jose de Areal had couple of scoring chances but striker Sheldon Dias blasted wide from close range.
