Asian Games 2026 probables revealed as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Samson make cut; Suryakumar absent

With IPL 2026 set to conclude after the final match, attention is now turning towards India’s packed international schedule. One of the major events on the calendar is the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, and reports suggest the BCCI has already prepared a 30-member list of probable players for the tournament.

According to reports, several young stars have made the provisional list, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh and Tilak Varma. However, the most surprising development is the reported absence of India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, despite leading the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup 2026 title earlier this year.

The final 15-member squad is expected to be selected from the shortlisted players. However, selectors face a unique challenge as the Asian Games, scheduled from September 17 to October 3 in Japan, will overlap with the West Indies’ white-ball tour of India. During the same period, India are slated to play five T20Is and three ODIs against the Caribbean side.

The scheduling clash could result in India fielding two separate teams simultaneously. While the senior players are likely to feature in the bilateral series against the West Indies, the Asian Games squad could largely comprise emerging talents and standout IPL performers.

Among the probable names, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as the biggest attraction. The 15-year-old enjoyed a dream IPL 2026 season, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs. He also rewrote the record books by smashing 72 sixes and maintaining an extraordinary strike rate of more than 237.

His exploits throughout the season, including several memorable performances in the playoffs, have intensified calls for an India debut. With the Asian Games expected to feature a younger squad, the tournament could provide the perfect platform for the teenager’s first appearance in national colours.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav’s reported omission has sparked debate. Although he remains one of India’s most accomplished T20 batters and recently captained the side to World Cup glory, his batting numbers have declined over the last two years. With cricket set to return to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028, selectors may be focusing on building a younger core for the future.

While the reported list is yet to be officially confirmed, it suggests that the BCCI could already be laying the foundation for India’s next generation of stars.
