ASSOLNA: Assolna Veterans defeated Candolim Veterans 3-1 to move into the semi-finals of the Assolna Veterans football tournament held at SAG ground Assolna, on Tuesday.
Both teams started the match on an attacking note, it was Assolna’s Joao Araujo who had the first best chance of the match in the 6th minute but the latter’s shot lacked power. At the other end, Candolim made two great moves through Francis Fernandes in the 10th and 12th minutes but the defence wall of Assolna thwarted Candolim’s moves .
Assolna Veterans netted two quick goals through Joao Araujo in the 20th minute with a placement shot and within four minutes Rosario Carvalho made it 2-0 with a ground shot for Assolna.
As the match progressed, Assolna striker was intentionally pulled down by Candolim defender inside the box as the referee awarded a penalty kick to Assolna but the penalty taken by Joao was saved by the Candolim goalkeeper Nelson Fernandes in the 46th minute.
Within a minute, Candolim pulled a goal back through Francis Fernandes. As the match was about to end, Michael Baretto of Assolna made it 3-1 in the 49th minute.
