Big win for Progress

Striker Glevito scored a fine brace while goals from Jewel, Ashley, Anil gave the Goan outfit a comfortable 5-1 victory over their Nicobar opponents

MAPUSA: Progress High School, Sankhali, Bicholim thrashed Govt Sr Secondary School, Malacca, Car Nicobar 5-1 in their third match, in all-India under-17 boys Subroto Mukerjee football tournament, at Ambedkar stadium, New Delhi, Wednesday. The winners led 2-0 at half time.
Progress boys played their hearts out and scored in the very fifth minute off a beautiful free-kick taken by Jewel Fernandes.
Soon, star striker Glevito Miranda doubled the advantage in the 35th minute after receiving a clever through ball from Ashley Cardozo.
After the break, the Goa lads tormented the rival defence. Hard-working medio Malcolm Gonsalves was at the helm of affairs but was unlucky to see his stiff right-footer hit the upright. However, the ball rebounded to Glevito, who nodded in from close range for the third goal. 
After trying hard, Nicobar managed to reduce the margin through a fine finish by S Emanuel but two quick goals but their opponents in the dying minutes killed their hopes. Ashley made it 4-1 while Anil Chawan rounded off the tally for a comfortable victory.
After two wins and a draw, Progress are still in a must win situation when they take on Army Boys, who lead Group A with three wins from as many matches.
