The fine run of Assonora United in the tournament came to a halt, when Calangute scored two goals in the second session of play.
Cheered by large vociferous supporters, Calangute dominated in the 90 minutes of the duel with Assonora side being pinned mostly into their own territory.
Calangute should have taken an early 10th minute lead where Deep Govekar’s header off a cross from Kunal Shirodkar banged the Assonora’s horizontal bar.
On resumption of play in the 55th minute Anand Kerkar leapt high above the Assonora defense to connect his header off a curling cross from Ashwin D’Souza, 1-0.
Just five minutes later Aniket Kerkar moved dangerously from the right flank and after dribbling a host of the Assonora defenders latched a rasping right footer which crashed into the far corner of the goal giving no chance to keeper Aaron Gonsalves , 2-0.
Calangute Association returned home richer collecting the winners cash prize of Rs. 40,000/- plus trophy while Assonora United FC had to be content with Runner’s Up cash prize of Rs. 30,000 plus trophy.
Earlier Candolim sports club officials introduced the chief guest Fr.Cipriano Da Silva-Parish Priest of Calangute, Guest of Honour Agnelo Fernandes,former MLA Calangute Constituency, special invitee Rajendra Tiwari, Manager Lakhanpal, GFA’s Executive members Raju Banaulikar, Patrick D’Souza, Gajanan Kerkar and Lavino Rebello,GFA’s Vice President to the players and team officials.
