Chennai Super Kings suffered a major setback in their IPL 2026 playoff campaign after a disappointing seven-wicket defeat against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. The loss came at a crucial stage of the tournament and pushed Chennai down to sixth place in the points table with 12 points from 12 matches.
The business end of IPL 2026 has now arrived, with every result significantly affecting the playoff race. While no team has officially qualified yet, the margin for error has become extremely small, especially for sides placed outside the top four.
Chennai had staged a remarkable comeback in recent weeks after struggling earlier in the season. Three consecutive wins had revived their campaign and placed them firmly back in contention. However, the heavy defeat to Lucknow has complicated their qualification hopes considerably.
Defending a competitive total of 188, CSK’s bowling attack failed to contain the LSG batters, who comfortably chased down the target with seven wickets in hand. The defeat also affected Chennai’s already modest net run rate, which now stands at +0.027.
Despite the setback, Chennai are still mathematically alive in the playoff race. Their qualification chances currently stand at 27 per cent following the defeat. However, the path ahead is extremely difficult.
CSK now need to win both of their remaining league matches to finish with 16 points. Even then, qualification will depend on results involving teams such as Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
If Chennai manage only one win from their final two fixtures, they will end with 14 points, which is expected to be insufficient for a playoff berth.
Chennai’s remaining fixtures include a home clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18 before they travel to Ahmedabad to face Gujarat Titans on May 21.
At the top of the table, RCB, SRH and GT are currently tied on 14 points, while PBKS remain fourth with 13 points from 10 matches. Rajasthan Royals are fifth with 12 points, just ahead of Chennai on net run rate.
With the playoff battle entering its final phase, CSK can no longer afford any slip-ups if they hope to keep their IPL 2026 campaign alive.
