CALANGUTE: Hosts Candolim Sports Club kept their nerves to defeat Baina 9-8 via sudden-death after being held to a 1-all draw to move into semi-finals of Goveia Super Cup inter-village football tournament, at Dr. Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim, Saturday.
Baina surprised the hosts with an early goal in the 6th minute of play through Rohan Kasalkar off Shivraj. Stung by the deficit, Candolim got their act together and restored parity in the 45th minute through Gaurish Mandrekar off Manuel Crasto.
The winners were decided on penalties. Stanley D’Silva, Joelif Simoes (2), Gauresh Shirodker, Nehal Naik, Elvis Pereira, Bharat Morje and Harish Diukar scored for Candolim while Vikas Mazumdar, Laxman, Omar Muthawali, Stanley Fernandes, Basuraj, Pritesh Sangelkar and Rohan were on target for Baina.
Yesterday, Calangute Association prevailed over Football Club of Siolim 6-5 via sudden death tie-breaker to move into the semi-finals.
Siolim came close to scoring in the 5th minute but Calangute defender Avdhut came to his side’s rescue saving a try from Sagar.
Another Siolim try by Francis was saved by Calangute keeper Andy. Calangute also missed a couple of scoring opportunities.
Domnic Fernandes, Deep Govekar, Francisco Fernandes, Myron Araujo, Agnelo Fernandes and Andrew Fernandes converted for Calangute while Ryan D’Souza, Vinay Pednekar, Dylan Noronha, Sangam Pednekar and
Clauddio Fernandes found the mark for Siolim.
